“It was a very good week. I was sick the first round but felt much better the last two days,” said Romero. “I played great this week.”
Romero got off to a fast start by making birdie on the first hole for the second consecutive day. He immediately found himself in the lead, as his playing partner and second-round leader Bruce Fleisher made bogey. Romero would never relinquish the lead, and at one point expanded it to a four-stroke margin. He had seven birdies during the final round and a lone bogey in route to shooting six-under-par on the day.
The 18th hole was lined with huge galleries as fans awaited the conclusion to the Tournament. After he putted out for the victory, Romero gave a big fist pump to the roaring crowd that was in attendance.
Throughout the weekend Romero displayed a solid all-around game that led him to the title. He was second in putts per round (27.3) and was in the top-25 in fairways hit (82.2%), greens in regulation (75.9%), driving distance (275.1) and approach shot proximity to the hole (29 feet, 6 inches).
“I drove the ball really well this week but the real key was the putter,” said Romero. “It gave me a lot of confidence in all parts of my game.”
Romero became the first Champions Tour player to win three events in 2008. He earned $315,000 for his win and crossed $1.5 million in season winnings. He is now third on the Official Money List and fourth in the Charles Schwab Cup points standings.
