CARY, N.C. – The SAS Championship presented by Bloomberg Businessweek is celebrating its 10th anniversary and it could mean a big payday for one lucky fan and the YMCA WeBuildPeople Campaign, the Tournament’s new signature charitable project. The Tournament is partnering with the Durham Bulls and the YMCA of the Triangle on a promotion where one person will have a chance to compete for $1 million at the SAS Championship, with $500,000 going to the WeBuildPeople Campaign and $500,000 to the winner. The SAS Championship takes place at Prestonwood Country Club, September 20-26.
“We are excited to be able to celebrate our 10th anniversary with a $1 million putting contest and a new partnership with the YMCA WeBuildPeople Campaign,” said Tournament Director Jeff Kleiber. “We have already kicked off this promotion at the Bulls games where fans can win free SAS Championship tickets, Nike Golf merchandise, and register for the contest during the second half of the Bulls’ season.”
Proceeds from the SAS Championship have always benefitted educational organizations through the Triangle Community Foundation. This year’s signature project is the YMCA of the Triangle’s WeBuildPeople Campaign, with funds benefiting Y Learning, the YMCA’s standardized after school tutorial program. Y Learning students are in grades 3 – 8 and struggle to reach school system benchmarks. Most Y Learning students lack financial and educational support at home. Currently, more than 600 children from area schools participate in Y Learning at little or no cost, thanks to the YMCA’s WeBuildPeople Campaign.
During Durham Bulls home games, the SAS Championship will host a putting green next to the Wool E. World kid’s area behind the right field fence at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DBAP). With a $2 donation, fans can try to sink three putts, with proceeds benefiting the YMCA WeBuildPeople Campaign. Fans that participate will receive a free daily ticket to the SAS Championship, valued at $20. Any participant that makes two of the three putts will earn a second free ticket. The first 10 fans each night that make all three putts will receive a gift from Nike Golf.
In addition to the new putting green at the DBAP, fans will be able to register for the random drawing for the $1 million putting challenge free of charge at the Durham Bulls Fan Assistance area inside the DBAP or online at www.durhambulls.com and www.saschampionship.com. Each week two finalists will be awarded prizes from the SAS Championship and Nike, with the grand prize winner selected on Monday, September 20. The grand prize winner will participate in the $1 million putting challenge following the conclusion of the second round of the SAS Championship on Saturday, September 25.
The SAS Championship and Triangle area have become one of the most popular stops on the Champions Tour, annually drawing elite fields and tremendous community support. Tom Pernice, Jr., is the tournament’s defending champion. Visit www.saschampionship.com or call (919) 531-GOLF (4653 for more information.
