CARY, N.C.
– The SAS Championship presented by Bloomberg Businessweek has partnered with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) to host the inaugural Blue Points 5K at the SAS Championship, Saturday, Sept. 25, prior to the tournament’s second round. The 5K race will take place on the cart paths of the golf tournament’s back nine holes at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary.

“The SAS Championship is celebrating 10 incredible years and we felt adding a 5K race to the event would be another way to engage the community that has been so supportive to us, “said Tournament Director Jeff Kleiber. “Running the race on the cart paths of the tournament’s back nine provides participants a chance to experience the Prestonwood Country Club course and makes this event different from other 5K runs.”

The race, part of the tournament’s AT&T Family Day, will begin at 8 a.m., prior to the start of the tournament’s second round on Saturday. The race will begin near the main tournament entrance at Prestonwood Country Club and proceed along the SAS Championship’s back nine holes before concluding at the tournament’s 18th hole.

“BCBSNC is proud to partner with the SAS Championship in offering a truly unique experience through the Blue Points 5K,” said Matt Dutton, marketing manager for BCBSNC. “It’s a great opportunity for all families - whether runners or not - to get out and get active.”

Runners can register for the Blue Points 5K at the SAS Championship online at www.SASChampionship.com. Registration is divided into competitive and noncompetitive divisions. Prior to Monday, Sept. 20, competitive division registration costs $30 for adults, $20 for youth (17-years old and under) and $70 for a family. Competitive registrants will be timed via chip timing. Noncompetitive registration is $25 for adults, $15 for youth and $55 for a family. Registration costs will increase by $5 for each division on Sept. 20. Tournament officials are strongly encouraging advance registration in order secure a place in the event.

All race participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt, post-race food and admission to the SAS Championship on race day. As part of AT&T Family Day, admission will include access to Kid Zone activities, including bounce houses, a giant slide, putt putt and face painting.

BCBSNC created the Blue Points program to encourage members to lead a healthy lifestyle. Participants earn points every day by recording their physical and wellness activities, including exercise, eating fruits and vegetables, getting preventive screenings, or participating in any of BCBSNC’s Online Healthy Living Programs. Points accrue with each activity and can be redeemed for gift cards and merchandise to over 250 popular retailers. BCBSNC members can register for the program at www.bcbsnc.com/bluepoints.
