CARY, N.C. – Champions Tour rookies Mark Calcavecchia, Tommy Armour III and J.L. Lewis will compete in the 2010 SAS Championship presented by Bloomberg Businessweek, tournament officials announced today. A Champions Tour golf event in its 10th year, the SAS Championship is being held at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, September 24 – 26.
“We are pleased to welcome Mark, Tommy and J.L. to the SAS Championship for the first time,” said Tournament Director Jeff Kleiber. “Each one of these players has carded multiple victories on the PGA TOUR and they will be tremendous additions to this year’s field.”
The winner of The Open Championship in 1989, Calcavecchia spent over 100 weeks in the top 10 of the World Golf Rankings from 1988 to 1991. Calcavecchia made his Champions Tour debut at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open in June, finishing tied for sixth. He has posted three top 10 finishes on the Champions Tour this year, including a second-place finish at the 3M Championship in August.
Armour III was a regular on the PGA TOUR through 2009, where he carded two victories. He made his Champions Tour debut at The ACE Group Classic in February, firing an 11-under-par 61 in the final round to set a course record and finish in second place, one stroke behind Fred Couples. Armour has carded second-place finishes in two other events this year. Armour’s grandfather was the legendary Hall of Famer by the same name, who won three major championships while competing in the 1920s and 30s.
Lewis carded two victories during his PGA TOUR career – the 1999 John Deere Classic and the 2003 84 Lumber Classic. Lewis made his Champions Tour debut at The Senior Open Championship in July. He finished tied for 12th at the U.S. Senior Open and tied for sixth at the JELD-WEN Tradition.
