Langer wins Senior British Open

Bernhard Langer won his first major title on the Champions Tour Sunday with a one-stroke victory over 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin at the Senior British Open at Carnoustie.

Langer held off a Sunday charge from Pavin, who entered the day three shots back. Langher built the lead to four strokes after seven holes, but consecutive bogeys on holes eight and nine to cut the lead to two at the turn. Pavin’s birdie at No. 11 pulled him within one stroke, but the turning point came at No. 15 when Langer had a two-putt birdie from 35 feet and Pavin made bogey after each had birdied No. 14. Langer maintained his margin until No. 18. When Pavin missed his birdie opportunity, Langer just needed to two putt for a bogey and the one-stroke victory.

The victory was Langer's third of the season and he now has 11 career victories in 57 starts. As the winner of the tournament, Langer earned double points in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup race and overtook Fred Couples for No. 1 in the standings. Couples, who did not play in the event, led coming in with 1,433 points, but Langer’s 631 points moved him from fourth place into first with 1,449, a margin of just 16 points going to next week’s U.S. Senior Open at Sahalee.
